My travel guide Moon California has been divided up into downloadable chunks and published for Kindle. So far, the Palm Springs & the California Deserts, North Coast, Tahoe, and Sacramento sections have been published as individual Kindle e-books. These e-books cost about $4 apiece. The e-books are compatible with the ubiquitous iPhone.
I think that the digital format is an awesome idea for travel guidebooks. If you are headed to one of the regions above, you can download the guidebook segment to your portable, lightweight device. You don’t have to carry a heavy book with you. You can find the info you need when you need it on your Kindle or other device. I can’t wait to try this out for myself when I’m next on the road.
Where I don’t think digital replaces paper is in the planning stages. Before my trips, I like to have a paper guidebook to peruse. I make notes, I fold down corners, I discover new destinations, and I dream.
