My dad has been a rail buff since his earliest childhood, and introduced both me and my sister to this slow, gorgeous means of travel when we were wee children. The article below does a poor job of describing what rail travel really means. It IS much slower than air travel (especially if you’re on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight line). You get to watch the scenery as you travel past it. But there’s so much more to it than that.
To travel by rail is to take a mythic journey. On a luxury train, you experience the elegance of travels past. You feel your trip in a way that’s just not possible on a plane or even in a car. (A car road trip has its own unique ethos–more on that in a future post.) You’re not just getting from point A to point B–you’re on the train.
I need to get myself on a train trip soon. Maybe I’ll brave the Coast Starlight in a new direction–toward my friends in Seattle.
