Looking for a last minute Memorial Day getaway? Want to avoid the hassle and traffic of heading out of town? Consider spending a couple of days in Santa Clara, getting far away from earthly reality. This year’s three day long BayCon science fiction convention has a steampunk theme and a mysterious back story.
Once you’ve stepped in the doors of the Hyatt-Regency Santa Clara hotel, you’ll enter the mysterious Lost Sky City of Pyrocumulon, becoming part of a Victorian-technocratic legend.
Join hundred of others in exploring the strange and beautiful netherworlds by attending keynote speeches by Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon, joining in a role-playing game, entering the Masquerade costume contest, or dancing (and drinking!) the night away at one of the balls or after-parties.
Or, just walk into the hotel lobby and check out all the folks in the amazing costumes. Feel free to stare—that woman has a steamship on the back of her bustle gown, and she’s arm-in-arm with a classic Klingon. And yes, the plumbing works on the four-foot turbine propelling that guy’s pocket watch.
The featured costume event, The Masquerade, starts at 8pm this Saturday night. All are welcome to watch the parade of costumed contestants, then take photos of their favorites and congratulate the winners.
Kids are always welcome at BayCon’s daytime events and demonstrations. There’s even a Young Fan’s division of the Masquerade costume contest!
